BE A DIGITAL IMMIGRANT, BUT WITH LOTS OF HUMAN LOVE

Orientation Class for Teachers by Philip Abraham, 17 June
Teachers need to digital immigrants  if not digital natives adept at using new digital tools in order to keep pace with their students, said Mr Philip Abraham, psychologist, and trainer at the orientation class for teachers on the topic
At the session conducted on 17 June, where the was never a dull moment and was full of practical hands-on activities, the trainer helped teachers identify their personality types.  He identified Generation Z, colloquially known as Zoomers, as the demographic cohort succeeding Millennials and preceding Generation Alpha. They are the generation who has the mid-to-late 1990s as starting birth years and the early 2010s as ending birth years. While dealing with Generation Z, teachers should help build their self-esteem as they tend to have pseudo self-esteem and a false identity.  Social media plays a major role here. Generation Z, he said, labour under the instant syndrome. They look for instant emotions, instant relationships, instant gratification and Instagram.
Long use of digital media affects children’s cognitive domain causing a cerebral hijack.  The pre frontal lobe gets disconnected and stops them from logical thinking.  Children who do not have a base line of happiness tend to be drawn towards drugs, smoking and pornography.  Making them participate in sports till at least Class VIII is one way of countering this. The only antidote, advised Mr Abraham, is for teachers to keep themselves up-to-date with the students’ digital world and treat them with love and more love.
Ms Sajitha, science faculty, welcomed the gathering and Ms Manju, Hindi faculty, offered the vote of thanks.
